Fishes of Kenyir

Description of the book :

“How many fish species are in Tasik Kenyir and its feeder streams and rivers? What had happened to the fish and fisheries in the reservoir? What is the recent status of fisheries at Tasik Kenyir?” This book provides updated information and new records on native inland freshwater fishes and the introduced species found in streams and rivers flowing into Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu. The vast water bodies and numerous streams and rivers in the tropical rainforest provided various conducive habitats that house rich ichthyofauna, many of which were economically important as fisheries resources and eco-tourisms, especially sport fishing.

This book is a product of intense sampling inventories and studies on the freshwater fishes in the Tasik Kenyir. The fish species richness was surprisingly diverse, with a total of 75 native fish species, and 25 were additional records for the reservoir itself. The information on species identification, morphological description, and habitat of fishes found in Tasik Kenyir is current and highly accurate. Discussion on Invasive Alien Species (IAS) was also included.

The book provides photographs to guide the readers to all known fish species reported by previous and current researchers. This book will be useful for students and the public alike interested in indigenous freshwater fish species and conservation managers as a guide to identify and manage the taxonomically diverse fishes of Kenyir. The resources are depleting, and efforts to conserve these precious natural resources are urgently needed.
